“My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue?”
The story of the Owens family will pull you in and keep you turning pages. Alice Hoffman’s deft way of incorporating the supernatural into ordinary events makes this story ring true. It will make the reader a believer… at least for the duration of the book.
Sally and Gillian, orphaned sisters raised by their aunts, are gifted with the special abilities all the Owens women have inherited. While their aunts dispense charms to local women who wish to make the man of their choice fall in love, no matter the consequences, Sally and Gillian just want normal lives where the residents don’t call and treat them like crazy people.
The sisters try to run from love their whole lives, but can never escape it. One finds it’s darker more violent side, while the other finds such true love that when its lost; it utterly destroys her. Anyway, they’re both trying to escape the Owen’s house and their aunts, though in the end aren’t able to ever really leave either behind.
Practical Magic talks about many things, and all of the ingredients are wonderful and sad and creepy, but addictive! At the heart of the story is the power of love, with a little magic thrown in, for good measure. I found it to be unpredictable, in the best way possible, and utterly intoxicating.
I highly recommend this magically sweet story!
