This is an introductory talk on one of the best scholarly books on Shakespeare to appear in recent times, with a special focus on his female characters‘ plight.
We will examine how Cressida, Hermione, Desdemona (amongst others) suffer abuse at the hands of their lovers or husbands in a world where a lady’s word, or worth for that matter, is not as «potent as a lord’s», to put it mildly.
